A One-of-a-Kind Nutcracker Rooted in 1840s Fort Vancouver Make a holiday trip to Vancouver, Washington, and experience Columbia Dance’s original Fort Vancouver Nutcracker, December 18–20 at Skyview Concert Hall. This is not your typical Nutcracker. Set in 1840s Fort Vancouver, the production weaves Tchaikovsky’s beloved score into the real history of the Pacific Northwest, with scenes inspired by the people, places, and stories of the region. Beavers, fur trappers, covered-wagon travelers, dancing wapato plants, and a mystical moon all find their way into this imaginative take on the holiday classic. Created through historical research and collaboration with local historians and Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, the production offers a distinctly Pacific Northwest interpretation of a familiar holiday tradition. Since its debut in 2021, more than 28,000 people have experienced the Fort Vancouver Nutcracker, with approximately 5,000 audience members attending each year. More than 100 student dancers and guest artists bring the production to life, presented by Columbia Dance, a nonprofit arts organization founded in 1989. Come for the ballet and make a weekend of it. Explore Fort Vancouver, the Vancouver Waterfront, local restaurants, and other holiday activities while you’re in town.
